The Auckland Renter's Moving House Checklist

A week-by-week plan for moving into your new PS Nexa Homes rental without the last-minute scramble.

Moving is consistently rated one of life's more stressful events — mostly because the small tasks pile up and get forgotten until the last 48 hours. Here's a checklist built around a typical Auckland tenancy start date.

4 Weeks Before

  • Confirm your move-in date in writing with your property manager.
  • Book removalists or a van early — Auckland's peak moving weekends (month-end, especially December–February) book out fast.
  • Start using up food in your freezer and pantry rather than transporting it.
  • Notify your current landlord of your move-out date per your notice period.

2 Weeks Before

  • Redirect your mail with NZ Post.
  • Set up power and internet at the new address to connect on move-in day — Auckland providers typically need 3–5 working days' notice.
  • Update your address with: IRD, your bank, Waka Kotahi (driver licence and vehicle registration), your GP, insurers, and any subscriptions.
  • Arrange contents insurance for the new property if you don't already have a policy that transfers.
  • If you have kids, confirm school zone changes and notify the school of the transition.

1 Week Before

  • Confirm final details with your property manager: exact key collection time and location, any move-in inspection time.
  • Start packing room by room, labelling boxes with contents and destination room.
  • Take photos of your current rental (and any existing damage in your new one, once you have keys) — this protects your bond at both ends.
  • Arrange time off work for moving day if needed.

Moving Day

  • Do a final walkthrough of your old place — check cupboards, the garage, and outdoor storage.
  • Take meter readings (power, water if separately metered) at both properties.
  • Collect keys and confirm how many sets you've received.
  • Photograph the new property's condition before unpacking, particularly carpets, walls, and appliances — this is your record if there's ever a bond dispute.

First Week in Your New Home

  • Locate the mains water shut-off, fuse box, and any smoke alarms — test them.
  • Check the Healthy Homes disclosures given at sign-up match what's actually installed (heat pump, insulation, ventilation).
  • Set up rent payments (usually automatic payment) for the correct due date.
  • Save your property manager's contact details for maintenance requests.
  • Introduce yourself to neighbours — genuinely useful for parcel deliveries and knowing who's who on the street.

A Few Auckland-Specific Notes

  • Traffic and access: check whether your new street has parking restrictions on moving day — some inner-city Auckland streets require permits for removal trucks.
  • Rubbish and recycling: collection days vary by council area; check Auckland Council's website for your new address before your first bin day.
  • Storm season: if you're moving between May and September, keep an eye on weather — Auckland's wet season can turn a moving day miserable fast.
